DofE Expedition Teaching Resources

If you find this resource useful please consider linking to this page

As part of DofE London Region's select team of Outdoor Educators, I advise and deliver training to people who provide expeditions in their own school, youth service or borough.

I've also delivered many, many, practice and qualifying expeditions.

This page is devoted to some of the teaching resources that I find helpful; which you're welcome to download and use.

Cooking a meal on a gold expedition

Distance Travelled

There's no more appropriate metaphor.

Growth in young people from the start to the finish of an expedition programme has to be seen to be believed.

This quiz is a useful way to get feedback about a group's level of knowledge; and can be used with Bronze, Silver or Gold groups.

I use the mobile phone question to clarify the rules — whatever you've decided to do — since local policies vary considerably.

The emergency procedures question gives confirmation and reassurance to you (and also the group) that they know what to do.

The 'most dangerous thing' question helps confirm whether a group has a good understanding of risks involved. I believe that in most circumstances the answer will be 'roads'; and that an essential part of expedition training is to discuss and practice road safety.

Finally, question 10 describes an event so common that it seems wise to have a conversation about it beforehand — when the group aren't in the thick of a disagreement and can be clear-headed about what they feel and how they might cope.

I adapted it as I feel there is a place for a simpler routecard that still contains sufficient information for expeditions in bronze terrain.
